Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are part of Spain but lie just off of the African coast. The seven islands that make up the archipelago consist of the five main holiday islands, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria,Tenerife and La Palma and the two tiny islands of El Hierro and La Gomera. These dramatic islands are thought to be the tips of a vast volcanic mountain range lying beneath the Atlantic Ocean. The sub-tropical climate is controlled by the Gulf Stream and the Trade Winds so that throughout the year there is almost guaranteed sunshine and little rainfall, making the islands a 12 month long villa holiday destination. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in particular are famous as Christmas holiday villa destinations and are only a 4 hour flight from Europe. Along with modern holiday resorts you can still find quaint whitewashed hamlets perched on hilltops, picturesque fishing villages and locals in traditional dress working the fields. The two most easterly islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, have been shaped by the powerful natural forces to give them a distinctive character: dark, dramatic volcanic landscapes and glorious beaches of golden Sahara sand. These captivating islands have avoided being overdeveloped and offer laid back family resorts with a high standard of holiday accommodation in particular private holiday villas with pools. Lanzarote was born out of a series of volcanic eruptions which has created one of the most extraordinary landscapes on the planet. Holidaymakers flock to Lanzarote to enjoy the unique combination of wonderful golden sand beaches against a spectacular backdrop of over three hundred volcanoes. Fuerteventura is known as the 'Caribbean' of the Canary Islands with seemingly endless stretches of superb, fine, white sand beaches and crystal clear water. Both islands offer child friendly beaches, surfing beaches and remote spots favoured by naturists, nature lovers and bird watchers. The wonderful climate, volcanic sea beds and rich marine life of the Atlantic waters surrounding the islands attract scuba divers, big game fishermen and sailors from all over the world.
