Central Malta This area is most well known for the ancient citadel of Mdina and the nowadays capital of Malta, Valletta. Oozing with history, the walled city of Mdina is home to St Paul’s Cathedral and is known as the Silent City. Valletta was built by the Knights of St John in the 16th and 17th centuries and was said to be a city built by gentleman for gentlemen. To this day it still retains an air of aristocratic elegance. It is home to many of Malta’s most important museums and monuments and has been named a World Heritage site. Across the Grand Harbour from Valletta, are the historic fortified towns of Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea, known as the Three Cities. Left largely unvisited, the Three Cities are a slice of authentic life, and a glimpse into Malta’s maritime past. On the east coast lies the main seaside resort of Sliema which was once the preserve of the Maltese upper classes and to this day it is still a status symbol to own a residence here. Lying north of Sliema is cosmopolitan St Julian’s with hotels, apartments and private villas rising along its rocky shoreline. Paceville is the in the heart of St Julian’s and is known as the nightlife capital of Malta.
