Western Algarve There is something for everyone in this area of the Algarve. Miles of golden sandy beaches to soak up the sun and swim in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Inland the countryside is a patchwork of orange and lemon groves, fields of almond and olive trees and scattered with white washed villages. The traditional way of sleepy life is still found in many of the unspoilt villages, friendly locals, bodegas with local produce to sample, fish restaurants with mouth-watering dishes such as ‘Cataplana’ or the traditional Portuguese piri-piri cuisine. Portimao situated on the mouth of the River Arade is the Algarve's second largest fishing port. With a comprehensive shopping centre and a rich diversity of bars, restaurants and cafes, Portimao offers everything a holiday maker can expect from a modern metropolis. Lagos is well worth a visit, offering easy sophistication and an effortless balance between local traditions, historic greatness and modern reality. This traditional fishing town offers boat excursions, fishing trips and dolphin/whale spotting trips all departing from the marina. Local fishermen land the day's catch which can then be sampled in the nearbye restaurants. Lagos is also steeped in history and many historic sites and centres can be visited. Sangres and San Vincente are on the western most points. The combination of wind and sea erosion has given the coastline a puzzle of caverns, grottoes and sheer cliffs, as well as stretches of golden sands. Battlements stand on top of the cliffs reminding us of Portugal's turbulent history. Sunsets in the western Algarve are a sight to behold and most villas have views to the west where the evening skies can be aglow with golden hues through to the purples and midnight blues of the night.
Lagos Lagos is the perfect destination for a sun-soaked beach holiday in the Algarve. The most popular beach in the area is Meia Praia, a blue flag beach, offering activities which include parasailing, windsurfing and waterskiing. Lagos also has a number of sandy coves, which can be found along the coastline. The town centre has many fascinating shops selling local copperware, leather items, wines and pastries and in the old town there are many historical sites and intricate architecture. The beautiful marina has a number of stylish cafes and it is possible to book boat excursions, such as the ‘Dolphin Seafari’ or the ‘Grotto Tour’ with local fisherman giving a guided tour of the caves, cliffs and coves that surround the area. In the evening Lagos comes alive with a superb atmosphere as the bars and restaurants entice you with mouth watering food and live music. We have 1 villas in Lagos. | | |
