Xewkija Xewjija, known as the village of the rotunda, lying halfway between the Mgarr Harbour and the capital of Victoria is dominated by the church of St. John the Baptist which boasts the third largest unsupported dome in the world. This monumental church, which can seat up to 4000 people, is an enormous circular building constructed in local limestone and offering magnificent panoramic views of Gozo from its impressive dome. One can sit in the village square enjoying an afternoon drink and snacks in one of the local bars but the nearest restaurants are found in the Mgarr fishing village or in Victoria a few minutes drive away. On the outskirts of the village are the island's only traffic lights and beside them a unique windmill which, instead of being a square building, has eight sides corresponding to the eight points of the compass and the eight dominant wind directions. The Gozo Heliport and the University of Malta are nearby. Xewkija has a heritage of craftsmanship and produces the best Gozitan stone masons, whose work can be seen throughout the island.
Xewkija Xewkija is an excellent choice for those wanting a taste of Gozitan life in a small traditional village but within easy driving distance of Mgarr Harbour and walking distance of the capital, Victoria. We have 4 villas in Xewkija. | | |
