Balearic Islands

Magnificent craggy coastlines shelter hidden sandy bays and the landscape is a mixture of fragrant pine forests, lush, fertile plains and almond and olive groves. The winters are mild and summers are hot, the skies and the seas as sparklingly clear as you'll find throughout Europe. There is far more than meets the eye when it comes to the Balearics. These islands are often understated as cultural hot spots and not many know of their rich and diverse history. Due to their situation in the centre of the Mediterranean, the Balearic Islands have played an important part in trading history and have even been involved with pirates.
There are historic towns and villages everywhere, and an unexpected glimpse of the real Balearics is always just round the corner. Leave the coastal holiday resorts and eventually you'll spot a local farmer astride a donkey in front of an ancient windmill or a fisherman mending his nets. Farming and fishing were the traditional livelihood of the Balearic Islands and today tourism is the main industry. Nowadays they are packed with interesting attractions from prehistoric remains to modern theme parks. Mallorca is the biggest and most visited of the islands. Its cosmopolitan capital city, Palma, is a major port dominated by a striking Gothic cathedral. The landscape changes dramatically from soaring mountains to gently terraced hillsides to pretty secluded coves. Bohemian Ibiza may be smaller but it has a big reputation with its legendary nightlife, chic, sophisticated holiday resorts and some of the best beaches in the Balearics. Picturesque Menorca is the quietest and calmest of the islands with rolling green countryside, deep valleys and olive groves giving way to rugged cliffs hiding idyllic fishing villages and un-spoilt resorts.
