Cape Town Backed by the familiar shape of Table Mountain, Cape Town presides over a coastline of unsurpassed beauty: miles of beaches, mountains hugging the coastline, and 18th century Cape Dutch wineries. Cape Town, affectionately known to South Africans as the "Mother City" is the sentimental home of all South Africans - and certainly the city that was responsible for the development of modern South Africa. Aside from its overwhelming beauty, Cape Town is home to Southern Africa's best restaurants, beaches, museums and hotels.
The city itself is contained in a small area, known as the City Bowl, underneath Table Mountain and Signal Hill. The feel of the city is dominated by its historic role as a trading port linking Africa and Europe, with elegant colonial buildings, cobbled streets, open markets and certainly a more relaxed, laid-back attitude than Johannesburg. Cape Town's "suburbs" stretch to the north of the city and more than 30 km to the south.
Perhaps unlike most cities, Cape Town's suburbs offer as much, if not more, than the city itself. Clifton, Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Llandudno and Blouberg are known for their beaches. Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay and Hout Bay evolved from fishing villages and each still has a beautiful harbour and village-in-a-city feel. Constantia, 15 minutes south of the city itself, was the site of the first vineyards in South Africa in 1685 and is still home to five magnificent wine estates where visitors can attend tastings and enjoy one of the many fabulous restaurants. Forty minutes from Cape Town are the magnificent wine-growing regions of Paarl and Stellenbosch where one can visit beautiful, Cape Dutch style wineries, enjoy gourmet picnics and meals and take in the region's beauty.
