The sun-drenched landscape of Cyprus is steeped in history. With Greek columns, Hellenistic theatres, Roman mosaics, Byzantine churches with fantastic frescoes, Gothic monuments, Venetian walls, Turkish baths and a British Road System, Cyprus has indeed a dramatic past. This beautiful island has an amazing diversity of scenery, ranging from the flat central and coasta plains, to the lofty mountainous areas of Troodos and Kyrenia.
There are six major towns Nicosia, the capital situated inland in the middle of the Mesaoria plain, and the five coastal towns of Limassol, Larnaka, Pafos, Kyrenia and Famagusta. The latter two, in the north-east of the island, have been under Turkish occupation since 1974 and are accessible to visitors via organised coach tours.

The resort town of Polis overlooks the beautiful Chrysochou Bay with its charming fishing refuge of Latchi. Cradled by rugged mountains, centred in the Chrysochous Bay and surrounded by a patchwork of citrus groves and vineyards, the sleepy town of Polis has managed to doze through the property boom that's transformed much of the south coast. The town's whitewashed sugar cube houses, plump Orthodox Church domes and shady courtyards are a reminder of a Cyprus that's fast disappearing and much of Polis' charm lies in watching local life tick slowly by.
