Ghajnsielem Ghajnsielem is the first Gozitan village to greet you as you arrive in Gozo at the Mgarr Harbour. Ghajnsielem simply means the Spring of Peace and owes its name to a natural spring which for many years was the centre of local life in this small village. Today the spring no longer exists, buried deep under the modern village square. This charming little village is dominated by the church of Our Lady of Lourdes and the majestic Fort Chambray. Fort Chambray was built in 1794 and was intended to house a new fortified city but as the fear of attacks diminished the city was never built and the fortifications were used instead as soldier barracks. From this old stronghold you can enjoy spectacular views across Gozo’s southerly cliffs, Xatt l-Ahmar and the Northern Camino Channel. Within the village is the mysterious Square of the Apparition where it is believed Our Lady appeared to a local shepherd and requested him to build a church. The Church of Our Lady of Loreto was duly built in 1820. A visit to the old Franciscan convent and the Church of St Anthony of Padua should not be missed. Mgarr village is only a 15minute walk away where you can sample the local Gozitan food and watch the local fishermen.
