A whacky, enormous, steel cactus, designed by Cesar Manrique, marks the entrance to this fascinating attraction. It sets the tone and lures you in to a surreal display of over 1,400 species of tiny to gigantic cacti of endless shapes and textures, collected from all over the world. The Cactus Garden was Manrique's last project before his sudden death and was said to be his favorite. As with all Manrique's venues, it blends seamlessly into the local surroundings, in this case the apparently endless fields of prickly pear cacti, formally the heart of Lanzarotes cochineal industry. The garden has been designed using water features, stone sculptures and Japanese influences to create a venue of visual tranquility, in a terraced ampitheatre, set on four levels. A beautifully preserved windmill overlooks the garden and offers a display of the grinding of toasted maize into the local staple diet of gofio. There is a souvenir shop and a bar restaurant on site.
