Imagine the thrill of driving through a wondrous lunar landscape on a specially painted bus that is camouflaged by the myriad colours of the scenery. Gasps of wonder and thrall escape from fellow passengers as the bus weaves it’s way through the Timanfaya National Park, the scene of the devastating volcanic eruptions in 1730. Named the Fire Mountains, it is easy to see how they burst forth with boiling lava. The remains look as though they cooled off only weeks ago, with drips and drops still hanging from overhangs on either side of the bus. We were glad that the driver is so experienced! The orange vehicle lurches around another steep and sharp bend, revealing one more of a hundred different awe-inspiring vistas across the entire island towards the sea. The minerals in the mountains change colour constantly and you can not help being deeply affected by this trip through spiritual tranquillity produced by nature at it’s most destructive and at the same time at it's most creative.

If you do nothing else while on holiday in Lanzarote, see none of the other attractions of the island and never leave the side of your sparkling villa pool, you must go and see this astonishing and breathtaking sight. Only the official bus is allowed to drive around this 35 minute trip, you never see another car. The integrity of the experience has been maintained to the highest standard and there is an excellent commentary in three languages. This trip is part of the entrance cost of entering the park. Cesar Manrique designed the restaurant which overlooks the mountains, which, like all his installations is unique. You can eat chicken cooked on a grill heated by the still-burning fire at the heart of the volcano, visit a souvenir shop and watch two demonstrations of the power and intensity of the heat under your feet.

If you can take in any more experiences after this trip, go for a camel ride along a trail at the bottom of the mountain and experience how the locals on the island travelled around just  a short time ago.
