Luz and Area

The most westerly major resort along the coast heading west, Luz was a bit of a well kept secret until the new road network made the journey considerably shorter and the area more accessible. The whole of the town is easily reached on foot and there are some delightful restaurants within the cobbled streets and along the sea front and even on the beach, there's nothing quite like dining with sand between your toes. In its western location, Luz has become a centre for water sports which can be enjoyed at the Luz Ocean Club and the resort also boasts a renowned tennis academy run by Jonathan Markson. Lately there have been new additions with spas and fitness clubs providing some impressive modern facilities.
Within a short drive is the wonderful ancient town of Lagos, steeped in the history of its seafaring past, it was from here that the Portuguese Mariners set sail on their voyages of discovery to the New World. Today Lagos is well worth a visit, not only for its historical sights and fine architecture, galleries and museums but for its shops and restaurants, its wonderful produce and fish market, beautiful beaches and to explore its stunning coastline.
Heading west from Luz is the delightful resort of Burgau, a traditional fishing community that has embraced its visitors who enjoy the fabulous beach and old world atmosphere. Heading further west you'll reach the south western tip of Europe, Sagres and Sao Vincente. The combination of wind and sea erosion has created a puzzle of caverns, grottoes and sheer cliffs, as well as stretches of golden sands. Battlements stand on top of the cliffs reminding us again of Portugal's turbulent history. Sunsets in the western Algarve are a sight to behold and most villas have views to the west where the evening skies can be aglow with golden hues through to the purples and midnight blues of the night.
