AmenitiesThe popular community of Vale do Milho is close to the sea, to the east of Carvoeiro. It is located between the town and Rocha Brava. Vale do Milho is perhaps best known for the challenging 9-hole golf course and the clubhouse is a great venue for a relaxing lunch. With a couple more restaurants, including the typical Portuguese restaurant in Aerias dos Moinhos and the stunning Centiannes beach all within a short walk, it is possible to relax here without the car. The centre of Carvoeiro is some 3 kilometres along the coast and many people stroll down there in the early evening for a wider choice of restaurants, bars and shops, before taking a taxi home after dinner. Carvoeiro is particularly well known for its beaches. The rocky coastline has been eroded over time into a series of stunning, sandy coves. They are breathtakingly beautiful but need to be accessed with care and sensible footwear. Many of the beaches also have snack bars for a drink or light lunch. Over to the west, where the calm waters of the River Arade meet the sea and separate Carvoeiro from Portimao is Ferragudo. This is a resort in its own right, about 4 kilometres from the centre of Carvoeiro and offers a wide range of watersports. Between here and the town are many smaller coves, accessible only on foot or by boat. Currais, Lapa and Paraiso are close to the town and within easy reach of Clube Carvoeiro. On the Eastern side of town, some the beaches have been a little more developed, mainly by hotels, Almanzor and Centiannes are definitely worth a visit. Beyond Rocha Brava and the Farol lighthouse is Smuggler's beach, also known as Carvalho, which is reached by a cliff path that cuts through the rock in a series of tunnels. Further east is Benagil beach and the stunning Marinha beach, with its distinctive rock stacks. Both of these beaches have snack bars. As in most of the Algarve, golf courses abound in this area. The Carvoeiro Country Club centres around the Grammacho and Pinta courses near to Lagoa, as well as Vale do Milho, a challenging 9-hole course with a great clubhouse. There are tennis centres in Clube Carvoeiro and Rocha Brava and a riding centre and watersports at Ferragudo to the west. Waterparks are popular in the Algarve, the nearest is Slide and Splash, a smaller park between Lagoa and the Country Club. Several other parks are along the EN 125 heading towards Faro. Also worth a visit is the Zoo-Marine park, which is located just west of Guia. It has rides, animal shows and the opportunity to swim with dolphins. There are several boat trips available in the Carvoeiro area, exploring the fantastic coastline and stopping at exotic beaches. Perhaps the most memorable day out and under sail is aboard Santa Bernada - a replica caravelle, which departs from the old sardine pier in Portimao on weekdays.
